A suspect has been apprehended by the Anti-Cultism unit of the Rivers State Police Command after a confrontation.
Between alleged Viking members and Black Axe sect factions at the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education’s primary campus in Port Harcourt on Monday.
The conflict arising from the power struggle between the opposing cult factions caused immense fear among both students and faculty members. Panic spread across the campus after gunshots were heard.
It emerged that certain members of the Black Axe gang infiltrated the university looking for Viking members to retaliate against after one of their individuals had been attacked previously.
During the resulting commotion, one of the alleged members of the cult was apprehended by the security forces, which led to the discovery of a Beretta handgun.
The detainee who was apprehended was first held at the Rumulomeni Police Division near Iwofe on the campus grounds before being moved to the headquarters of the Anti-cultism unit within the Rivers Police Command.
Upon being reached out to, the Public Relations Officer of the Rivers State Police Command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, verified the occurrence, stating that the matter was under control and regular academic as well as non-academic operations had restarted.
She said , “Yes I can confirm the incident. One suspect is in Police custody, investigation is ongoing and adequate security measures had been put in place to prevent breakdown of law and order.”
